December 22, 1870 he married Sadie "Sally" Abbott. He then started his own grocery but this failing he sold sewing and washing machines for the Howe Sewing Co. finding
he could be a hustler at sales. In 1874 he joined the clothing store with his brother and Mr. white in Bowling Green. They had the business for 10 years before selling out. He then went on the road for 6 years as a salesman for A.L. Gans & Co. the same company J.R. had worked for. It was during this time while on the road he made his first
venture in the oil business on the Slaughterback farm in Henry Township 1887. In the spring of that year it was so successful he "broke the oil market". From this he started The Hankey & Sands Oil Co and has been engaged it ever since. With W.H. Milliken they started the People's Natural Gas Co in 1892 and furnished fuel for the city of Bowling Green. He also became a stock holder and Director of the First National Bank and remained active in the advancement of interests of Bowling Green and Wood County.
I.L. was a Republican and a Third ward council member for several years beginning in 1894. He was a long time member of the school board. Socially he belongs to the I.O.O.F., daughters of the Rebekah, Royal R.A.C.K.O.T.M.
