Peter was married twice. Peter married Betsey Stone about 1809. Betsey and Peter had six children. They were: Elmira Adams was born on 23 January 1809; Nancy Adams was born on 12 February 1812; Amanda Adams was born on 23 March 1814 in Gardiner, Kennebec County, Maine; John Adams was born on 22 January 1819 in Litchfield, Kennebec County, Maine; William Adams was born on 14 July 1821 in Gardiner, Kennebec County, Maine; and Maria Adams was born on 28 October 1827 in Boothbay, Lincoln County, Maine. Peter married Betsey's sister, Nancy Stone, about 1827. Nancy and Peter had four children. They were: Elizabeth Adams was born on 28 August 1828 in Gardiner, Kennebec County, Maine; Cyrus Adams was born on 02 February 1831 in Gardiner, Kennebec County, Maine; Peter Adams was born on 18 Nov 1833 in Union, Knox County, Maine; and Julia Adams was born on 12 May 1837 in Union, Knox County, Maine.

Peter Adams was a descendant of the immigrant, Henry Adams, of Braintree, Massachusetts, from whom the Presidents Adams descended, and was born in Franklin, Massachusetts, settled in Gardiner, Maine, where he became one of the leading men, removed to Lowell, Massachusetts, but died at Boothbay, Maine, being then one of the oldest Free Masons of that state; married (first) Betsey Stone, and (second) her sister, Nancy Stone.
