Find Body of 2nd Boy in River
Icy Big Sioux Takes Lives of Missing Youths

Sioux City - The recovery of the body of a second accidental drowning victim Thursday closed the books on the mysterious disappearance of 2 Sioux City boys. Shortly afternoon Thursday searchers pulled the body of Mark E. Jorgenson, 14, 1708 Wabash St., from the icy depths of the Big Sioux River near the Municipal Boat Dock.
The body was found in the same area as that of Danny Eugene Whitsell, 12, who was recovered Wednesday evening.
The recoveries confirmed suspicions of authorities that the pair of youths may have fallen through the thin ice while riding a bicycle on the river.
Authorities had feared that they might not recover the body of the Jorgenson boy because of the thick ice. Dragging operations were temporarily suspended Wednesday night & Thursday morning. Below freezing temperatures helped break the ice so search operations could be continued. As was the case with the Whitesell boy, the second body was recovered with the use of grappling hooks operated by men in boats.
Dr. Thomas L. Coriden, Woodbury county medical examiner, confirmed that both died of accidental drowning. Both, he said, tried to swim to the South Dakota side of the river & might have made it had it not been for their heavy clothing & the near freezing temperatures of the water. The bodied were found near the South Dakota bank.
The boys reported missing about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, had a red Schwinn 10-speed bicycle with them. Several sets of bicycle tracks were found near a hole in the ice, but the bicycle had not been recovered. A brown German Shepherd dog that left with the boys returned home about 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Members of a searching party Wednesday found 2 holes broken in the ice on the Big Sioux River within a block of each other, south of Interstate 29, probably a quarter of a mile.
During the afternoon a knapsack one of the boys was carrying & several traps were found on the ice near the second hole in the ice.
