Brevet Brigadier General. US Consul General at Kanagawa Japan from 1874 to 1885 and author of "Labor and Porcelain in Japan". He was a lawyer and member of the New York state assembly, and son of Peter Van Buren and Mary Brodhead. During the Civil War he was the Colonel of the One Hundred and Second New York Volunteers. He participated in the battles of Second Bull Run and Antietam as well as Battle Mountain. He left the service due to poor health. He was brevetted Brigadier General by President Lincoln in 1865.
