A graveside service for Norman Greenhill, took place May 11, 2009 at Bnai Abraham Memorial Park, Union. He was 90.

A resident of Bayonne for 87 years, Mr. Greenhill was a World War II veteran who served four and a half years in the infantry. He participated in the invasion and battles in the Ardennes, Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Infantry Combat Badge and was a member of the American Legion Mackenzie Post.

More than 60 years ago he played softball in Bayonne, where he was an all-star third baseman and a leadoff batter for such teams as the 33rd St. Club and Silver Bros. He retired as a player in the late 1950s and began his umpiring career -- first on the high school level and then with the American Softball Association, where he served as Hudson County umpire-in-chief until 1983. He joined the United States Slow Pitch Softball Association in 1990 and served as director and District 2 umpire-in-chief. He was inducted into the N.J. Softball Hall of Fame in 1997.

He and his wife were longstanding members of Temple Beth Am. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Sadye (Hodes).
