Harvard class of 1844, secretary of the Institute of 1770, Orator of the Hasty Pudding Club, Alpha Delta Phi, Phi Beta Kappa.

Cambridge Law School; admitted to the Massachusetts Bar 1850. He lived and practiced in Boston, also serving his community in many roles, including Common Council of the City of Boston, Overseer of the Poor. Trustee of Massachusetts General Hospital, Trustee of Phillips Exeter Academy, Trustee and Vice-President of the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts School for the Blind.
