Elizabeth was born to Robert Ronald and Irina (Hubley) Gould on Bird Island, Shumagin Islands Group, while her parents were on a sea otter hunting trip away from their home in Unga Village, Unga Island, Shumagin Islands, Alaska. After her father's death in 1898, Elizabeth went to live at the Jesse Lee Home for children in Unalaska, Alaska. It is where she met her future husband Peter Kashevarof. Peter and Elizabeth were married in Vermont where they lived until returning to Unalaska in 1910. After her husband Peter's early death in 1919, she moved with her five living children to Washington state and then to Oregon where her children lived at girl and boy schools while she worked as an in home servant for families of influence, it was her husband's wish that the children be educated in the United States. Alaska was still a Territory and education in rural areas was limited.

In 1935, Elizabeth second married Elbert B. Coons in Washington state.
