Harry Gene Akers left this world a better place when he died on July 20, 2009, in Dallas. He was born May 22, 1936, to Harry Thomas and Velma Coulter Akers in Tyler. Harry will be remembered for his kindness and generosity to others, his love of animals and his passion for history and for acquiring and collecting and trading World War II collectibles. Most individuals who encountered Harry immediately learned of his quick wit and sense of humor. He was a terrific friend to have on your side and could always be counted on for a helping hand. Harry was a wonderful brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, great-uncle and cousin to many relatives.

During World War II, and with Camp Fannin, a U.S. Army base being located in Tyler, Harry's parents, like most U.S. citizens during the war, invited soldiers into their homes each weekend for visits and meals. Harry knew and listened to many World War II stories firsthand and wished he had held onto the souvenirs some of the soldiers brought back to him from the war. Having spent his early and impressionable years around soldiers, Harry developed a passion for history and for acquiring and trading World War II collectibles. He was a longtime member of the Dallas Arms Collectors Association, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a happy and frequent visitor and exhibitor at local gun shows.

Harry grew up in Tyler, and after attending Tyler Junior College, left to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard, being stationed in Connecticut, the Great Lakes, Hawaii and Japan. He enjoyed his time in the Coast Guard and was proud of his service and the special times he had while serving in the military. After returning from his military duty, Harry went on to graduate with a banking and finance degree from the North Texas State University in Denton. His career path turned to insurance and he specialized in property claim losses, retiring from Employers Casualty Insurance Company in 1992.

Harry is survived by his longtime companion, Mary Franklin Cloud; one sister, Martha Grace Akers; two brothers, Jerry Thomas Akers and James Richard Akers and his wife Arlene. Additionally, he is survived by his former spouse, Phyllis Marie Barrett Akers and their children, Kristi Lynn Akers Rambo and her husband Pistol, Charles Wesley Akers and his wife Michelle, Hattie Melissa Akers Barham and her husband Bill; and one grandchild, Victoria Lea Rambo. Also surviving is former spouse, Susan Peterson Akers and their children, Amy Cook Chapra and her husband Christian, John Reagan Coulter Akers, Kerryanne Elizabeth Akers and Kyle Ross Akers. Harry also had one special niece, Cassandra Elizabeth Akers Fuller and her husband Les, with their children, Junior, Brayden and Kiya, along with many cousins. Harry always loved animals and was completely devoted to his two Jack Russell Terriers, Kendra and Jay-Jay.

As Harry has said, he had a wonderful life and missed nothing. He wished love and peace for everyone.

Donations in Harry's memory may be made to the ; or to The Legacy Scholarship Program, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, 2222 Welborn, Dallas, 75219.
