News of Miss Catharine's death made the front page of The Item, Sumter's newspaper, on May 10th. Her mother died when she was 12. And, as the oldest child, she filled the role of "mother". After graduation from Winthrop College, she taught in Gastonia, N. C., for 12 years; and she then returned to Sumter where she taught 33 years, Latin being her main teaching subject. She was my teacher several years; and, though not a big woman, the newspaper article noted comments from prominent community members taught by her who noted how she held a demeanor that was so high-minded and lady-like that she actually held an air about her that demanded respect and orderliness. I agree. She was also held in high respect by her colleagues. Her hobbies were genealogy and history related.
