Alex Spence was married to Hattie Belle Thatch and had two children, William Dewey Spence and Ruth Lea Spence Livingston. Alex died while working in California for the Railroad. His body was shipped back to his family in Nebraska for burial in the family plot. Hattie divorced Alexander in approximately 1899 a few years before his death in 1901.
