Samuel F. Maddux was born April 12, 1864 in northwest Georgia. Amanda Jane Bauman was born October 16, 1874 in Illinois. Both departed this life at their home in Cheyenne, Oklahoma January 3, 1947.
They were united in marriage December 25, 1895. To this union five children were born. They were a son who died in infancy, Ethel Warren who died March 17, 1941, C.F. Maddux, Albert Maddux and Naomi Swartwood, Cheyenne, Oklahoma, all of whom survive. They are also survived by three grandchildren, Lavona Maddux and Lanita Maddux, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Maddux, and Albert Jr. Maddux, son of Albert Maddux.
S.R. Maddux made the run into the Cheyenne and Arapaho country on the day of the opening, April 19, 1892 and staked off one of the best farms in the county which is located northeast of Cheyenne and where he and his wife resided for nearly fifty years, moving to Cheyenne about two years ago.
The Maddux's played an important part in the development of Cheyenne and Roger Mills county, being among the sturdy pioneers who always stood for the right. They represented the type whose word was as good as a bond, and who were honest, upright and honorable in all of their dealings with their fellowmen.
S.F. Maddux was one of the charter members of the Masonic lodge of Cheyenne and one of those instrumental in securing of their lodge building in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Maddux were both members of the Methodist church of this city.
One of the largest crowds ever to assemble in the Methodist church of this city was present on January 7, 1947 for the double funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Maddux whose deaths were the result of asphyxiation. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. R.O. Stewart, local pastor and the bodies were laid to rest in the Cheyenne cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.

ASPHYXIATION CAUSES DEATH
Discovered By Neighbor Approximately 12 Hours After Death Ends Lives of Aged Couple
Mr. and Mrs. S.F. Maddux came to their death, Thursday night, January 3, 1947, supposedly by asphyxiation as they sat by a gas floor furnace in their home in Cheyenne. The lifeless bodies of the aged couple were discovered about nine o'clock Friday morning by Mrs. Roy Sprowls, a neighbor. Mrs. Sprowls noticed that the light at the Maddux home was burning when she retired and noticed it burning during the night and that it was burning when she arose Friday morning. Presuming that one of them might be ill Mrs. Sprowls went to the Maddux home and when she received no response to her knock opened the door and went in to find their lifeless bodies, fully dressed, slumped in their chairs. Help was summoned immediately but nothing could be done, as they had been dead approximately 12 hours.
Mr. and Mrs. Maddux are survived by two sons, c.F. Maddux and Albert Maddux and one daughter, Mrs. J.W. Swartwood, all of Cheyenne. Surviving Mrs. Maddux also, are two brothers, M.E. Bauman and O.A. Bauman, both of Cheyenne. C.F. Maddux and family, and Mrs. Albert Maddux were returning from a vacation trip to California and were unaware of the tragic death of his parents until they arrived in Cheyenne at 2 o'clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Swartwood and husband were in California also and arrived in Cheyenne Sunday night.
The double funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Maddux were conducted at the Methodist church in Cheyenne Tuesday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. R.O. Stewart, delivering the funeral sermon. Burial was in the Cheyenne Cemetery under the direction of the Tunnard Funeral Home.
Mr. Maddux made the run into the Cheyenne and Arapaho country on April 19, 1892, and staked his claim near Cheyenne, which he homesteaded and made his home until he moved to Cheyenne a few years ago. In 1895 he was married to Amanda Jane Bauman. Mr. Maddux was 83 years of age and Mrs. Maddux was 73 years of age at the time of their death.
