Capt. John C. Melligan, State Armorer, and for years one of the most prominent military men in Syracuse, died at his Wood-ave. home at 9:30 o'clock this morning. … Captain Melligan was very widely known both in social and military circles throughout the State.

John C. Melligan was born in Camillus on January 26, 1860, remaining there 18 years. He started out in the world to make his own way, first clerking in a grocery store afterward going into business with Harrigan, the contractor, with whom he remained one year. In April 1883 at the age of 23, he enlisted in the army at Syracuse, … (can't read) … and in 1886 he was promoted to be first sergeant of company C, Forty-first regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 26, 1892. When the Spanish-American war broke out he was appointed quartermaster … first lieutenant in the 201 regiment, made captain of company B shortly after. …

Besides his widow and mother, Mrs. Mary Melligan, the captain leaves one son, James H., 11 months old, and one brother, James H. of Washington-st. His father Thomas Melligan, died about eight years ago. The captain was a Mason of the 32d degree. … Masonic funeral services will be conducted at Oakwood cemetery.
