Bertha Caroline Wilkening nee Alt was born at her family's farm in Fountain Creek area of Iroquois county, Illinois. She was the youngest child. She married William Wilkening by justice of the peace in Cissna Park on St. Valentines Day. The family moved in 1940 to farm one of four of William's father's 160-acre farms located in St. James township, Saint James, MN. Bertha had two children, Norma Chapman and Nancy Nelson.
