Alphonso was the son of Dr. John Newton and Emily Rickey. His father was a physician in Sidney for many years, and also opened the Penn drug store in 1862. Dr. Penn loss his eyesight in 1876 and his son, Alphonso, worked at the drug store.

Alphonso studied pharmacy and after the death of his father in 1896 he owned and managed the drug store established by his father.

Alphonso married Zinzie Gray in Sidney in 1874. They had two children; May and Valdez.

Alphonso was a Democrat, prominent in the afairs of the party and was the chairman of the Democratic central committee of Fremont County. He served in the office of school director and was a member of the K of P. Alphonso and Mary were members of the Baptist church.
