Roberta Centers, a native of Kentucky, born in Dawson Springs, moved several times with her family as they followed her father's employment opportunities with the Illinois Central Railroad. A 1940 graduate of Tilghman High School, Roberta was runner-up that same year for the local Strawberry Queen contest. She married Jackson "Jack" Centers, a Pearl Harbor survivor, on January 22, 1943, during a 30-day furlough, in Paducah. Following the war, Roberta traveled the roads of Jack's military transfers, and finally made San Diego their home. Having lost a son in 1955, it was here they raised their two surviving children. As her two children became adults, Roberta advanced her education at San Diego City College. She became a professional knitting instructor and co-owner of a Stretch & Sew Store in San Diego. Following the death of her husband in 1993, after 50 years of marriage, she decided, in 2005, to return to her Paducah roots at the age of 83. Heaven has gained a bright shining star.

She was the daughter of the late Elmer Jewell Vinson and the late Agnes Marie (Wininger) Vinson.

She is survived by one daughter, Terry Marie Strick, husband Robert, Benton, Ky; one son: Tweed Howard Centers, wife Melanie, Carlsbad, Calif.; sister-in-law, Shirley Vinson, Paducah, Ky; and grandson, Declan Tweed Centers, Carlsbad, Calif..

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jackson Parker Centers; one son, Rex Parker Centers; and brother, Jewell Lee Vinson.

Arrangements are being handled by Collier Funeral Home, P.O. Box 492, Benton, KY.

Graveside Services will be held at Fort Rosecrans Military Cemetery, San Diego, Calif. on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., Pastor David Plank officiating.

Visitation will be held at Collier Funeral Home, Benton, Ky on Saturday, September 8, 2012 between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
