PROMINENT BAPTIST MINISTER DIED LAST SUNDAY MORNING

Rev. Joseph W. Smith, 84, prominent citizen of Reidsville died at his residence Sunday after an extended illness. he graduated from Mercer University in 1887. Later he served as county superintendent of Tattnall County for a number of years and as trustee of the G.S.T.C at Athens for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Smith of Reidsville, two daughters, Mrs. Mattie Lou Moses, Vidalia and Mrs. Henry Pearson, Elin, N.C.; one son, H. Powell Smith, Reidsville; six grandsons, one granddaughter, and three brothers and five sisters.
Funeral Services were held at 3;30p.m. Monday at the residence with the Rev. H.M. Overstreet, pastor of Reidsville Baptist Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. T.H. Thompson, pastor of the Reidsville United Methodist Church. Burial was in Bull Creek Cemetery.
Active Pallbearers were grandsons, Joe S. Moses, Harry P Moses, Jack Moses, Joseph W. Smith II, Ralph F. Smith and John Edward Pearson.
Honorary Pallbearers were Herschel Elders, Josh Beasley, J.U. Tippins,Sr., H.B.Scott, Gundy Dubberly, Judge Joseph T. Grice, Lester Wilkes, F.L. Beasley, Henry Beasley, Lester Durrence, Cliff Kennedy, John P. Rabun, D.H. Holland, Jim Elders, Elias Hodges, J.A. DeLoach, W.F.Mosley and T.A.Kennedy.
