Born in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Texas to Myrtle Mae Hitt and William Edman "Willie" Collum (WW I Veteran). Grew up with one sister, Willie Mae.

Two months following the United States entry into World War II, John at age 20 registered for the military draft February 16, 1942. His registration card noted his residence as Shelbyville and he was employed on the family farm. He was described as five foot, seven inches tall, 150 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. For identification purposes he listed a scar between eyes into right eyes brow.

On June 18, 1942 John became Private Collum and given serial # 38140057 when he took the oath of enlistment in Tyler, Texas. Where he served is unknow but in March 1945 he entered a military hospital and was medically discharged in August. John passed at the age of 65 on October 16, 1987 and buried in the Wimberly Cemetery, Huxley, Shelby County, Texas with his parents. Day is done, God is nigh.
