Born Jan. 12, 1926, in Butler, he was the son of Clarence and Rose (Harvey) Portman.
He was a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Lowell. He also belonged to the Home Builders and American Legion Post 64. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Portman attended Notre Dame University, and had been employed by Sherwin Williams for 41 years. During that time, he worked at its stores in Butler, Wheeling, W.Va., and Marietta.
He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps and had served with the 2124th Base Unit obtaining the rank of corporal.
He enjoyed golf.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Elizabeth (Freeman) Portman, whom he married May 7, 1947; two sons, Dwight J. Portman of Cincinnati, and L. Robert Portman of Dayton, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Ellen R.) Bielewicz of Dumfries, Va., and Mrs Douglas (Louise) Ducsay of Tifflin, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
PORTMAN-Friends of Robert Joseph Portman, who died Monday, May 20, 1996, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hadley Funeral Home, 500 Fifth St., Marietta, Ohio. A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Marietta, with Monsignor Edward Kakascik, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Ridge Cemetery, Marietta.
Memorial donations may be made to Strecker Cancer Center, 400 Matthew St., Marietta, Ohio 45750; or St. Mary's School Building Fund, 320 Marion St., Marietta, Ohio 45750.
A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
