U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the North Georgia Agricultural College, he graduated from the law department of Mercer University in 1910, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Jasper, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives in 1917, served as solicitor general of the Blue Ridge judicial circuit of Georgia (1921-25) and as judge of superior courts of the Blue Ridge judicial circuit (1925-31). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and Seventy-third Congresses, serving until 1935. He was again elected to the Seventy-ninth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1945-53). Not a not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until failing health forced him to retire.
