James "Buck" Allen always said he was truly blessed. He was born Nov. 4, 1933, and departed this life on Aug. 14, 2012.

He was born to the late Red Allen and Betty (Jackson) Allen in Arcata, Calif. The Allen family moved to Nenana, in June 1950 where Buck met and married his wife, Marie Burk. Buck had a true pioneer spirit and experienced a variety of occupations that involved the natural beauty of Alaska from working the tugs on Interior rivers, flying with his brothers in Alaska's Interior, gold mining and commercial fishing in Southeast.

He was the superintendent on several major road construction projects such as the Dalton Highway, the first road overlay project on the Tok Cut Off Road, and the Craig-Klawock Highway from Hollis to Craig on Prince of Wales Island.

In 1972, Buck and his family moved from Fairbanks to Sitka to work with his brothers, Bob and Jack Allen, in the early years when Allen Marine Ways ran a boat haul out and maintained the chip barges for the pulp mill. Buck and his sons procured side contracts to retrieve broken bundles of logs that were scattered along the beaches, which often required challenging retrieval techniques. This was the sort of adventure Buck would seek out during his life.

Buck truly enjoyed the outdoors and spent a great deal of time with his family hunting, trapping, fishing and camping. His hobbies were photography, cooking, reading, drawing, and more recently, learning the technique of meditation, and learning to communicate with his family and friends from afar on the computer, on which he would also use up reams of paper printing his recipes to try. Buck also enjoyed taking road trips with his wife, exploring Alaska and areas in the Lower 48.

Buck moved into the Sitka Pioneers Home in 2011, and discovered in his retirement he could continue his hobbies nearly full time. He participated in other activities, like dancing, that came as quite a surprise to his family.

Buck will be fondly remembered by friends and family as a fun-loving, spirited man who enjoyed his life and a good joke. He was a loving man who always made his family his priority. Buck's enthusiasm and positive nature was contagious and an inspiration to all who came to know him.

Buck has two daughters who live in Sitka with their spouses, Theresa Allen-Olson and Karen Johnson; one daughter and one son living in Nenana, Janet Allen and Harvey Allen and his spouse; and one son living in North Pole, Jim Allen; and 10 grand children and five greatgrand children, all living in Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Allen, and daughter, Ren'ee Allen.

Buck was the eldest of four siblings, Bob Allen and his spouse, Betty Allen of Sitka; Jack Allen and his spouse, Tracy Allen of Haines; Dorothy Poulous and her spouse, Jim Poulous, of Kodiak.

A burial will be at a later date in Nenana. Honorary pallbearers will be his 10 grandchildren, Toby Brooks, Dania Allen, Todd Wyman, Ryan Allen, Stephanie Allen, Sidney Wyman, Brehanna Johnson, Chance Allen, Katrese Melville and Kevin Allen.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends are making contributions to "Brave Heart" of Sitka, in memory of Buck Allen. The mailing address is: P.O. Box 6336, Sitka, AK 99835. All other correspondence can be mailed to: 3009 Halibut Point Road., Sitka, AK 99835. Published in Daily News-Miner on August 19, 2012
