RALEIGH -- Dr. William Thomas "Bill" Fike, Jr. died Tuesday, January 15, from a respiratory illness. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Bill lived briefly in Minnesota before settling in Raleigh, NC.

Bill was a devoted father and grandfather, a trusted friend, an energetic educator and a respected mentor.

He had a bachelor' and master's degree from Penn State University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota.

Bill served as a Lieutenant in the US Army, including a tour in Korea.

He was a Professor in the Department of Crop Science at North Carolina State University, for 40 years.

Following his retirement he was named Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of Crop Science.

During his tenure at NCSU, he was instrumental in many research projects benefiting North Carolina agriculture. Bill will be long remembered for his devotion to NC farmers, students, faculty, and staff.

For his dedication and service, Bill was twice honored with the Outstanding Teacher Award, and also earned the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award and the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. As evidence of his commitment to helping those around him, Bill funded multiple scholarships through many years of work with Sears in Cary.

As testament to Bill's spirit of public service and generosity, the new Agronomy Teaching Garden was named on his behalf in September 2007. Dr. Fike will be always be remembered by faculty, students, family and friends with his signature phrase, "You are @#1".

One of Bill's greatest pleasures was to help others in need. An example of this is how he would care for someone's lawn when they were unable to do so themselves. Additionally, for many years he cared for the grounds at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Interstate 85, near Lexington, NC.

Surviving are: his daughter, Barbara A. Fike of Greensboro; granddaughter, Rosemary D. Link and her husband, Donald of Cary; and many friends. Bill was anticipating the birth of his first greatgrandchild in March.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary A. Fike; a special friend, Heath Chapin; and his second wife, Ida Leagan Fike.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2008 at JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University in the York Auditorium, within the Ruby C. McSwain Education Center. The family will receive following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in memory of Bill Fike to the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation, Inc., Attn: Dr. William T. Fike, Jr. scholarship fund, NCSU, Campus Box 7645, Raleigh, NC 27695.
