Consumption—Deceased Was Former Resident of Urbana

Special to The Courier-Herald: Pesotum, Ill., March 31.—Charles Hammer died at 3 o'clock this morning at his home in this village after a long illness from consumption. Deceased was about thirty years old and leaves a wife and two children. Up to about a year ago he resided at Urbana, where he was employed at the University of Illinois. Mr. Hammer was a member of the Urbana Tribe of Ben Hur. Members of that order will attend the funeral, which will be held Saturday at Homer. "Death of Charles Hammer - Young Man Expires at Father's Residence, Near Pesotum - Charles Hammer of Pesotum died at 3 o'clock this morning from tuberculosis at the home of his father, Matt Hammer, one mile north of Pesotum. He lived at Homer until about a year ago, when he went west for his health. He came back to Illinois and lived a short time in Urbana. Two months ago he went to the home of his father at Pesotum.

He was twenty-seven years old, leaves a widow and two baby girls, Mary and Margie, father and mother, one brother and four sisters – Erwin, Lena and Lottie, at home, and Mrs. Joseph Craig, of Atwood, and Mrs. Lewis Stone of Tolono. He was a member of University Place Christian church of Champaign and a member of Caledonia court No. 59, tribe of Ben Hur.

The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning from his father's home in Pesotum. Rev. S. E. Fisher of University Place church will officiate. Burial at the G. A. R. cemetery at Homer. " - Champaign Daily News, Thursday March 31, 1910 page 1 (Transcribed by the Homer Historical Society)
