Chapel services for Royce Lee "Shorty" Cates, 80, of Tyler, are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home chapel with Bro. Dennis Cliborn officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Memorial Park under the direction of Tyler Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Cates was born Jan. 12, 1929, in Mount Sylvan to the late Edell and Lillie Newton Cates and passed away May 19, 2009, in Tyler. He had lived in Tyler for the past 56 years, was retired from AT&T after 37 years as a PBX specialist, was self-employed for 19 years, served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a deacon for 55 years at Park Heights Baptist Church.

Mr. Cates was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kimbra Cates, and a brother, Ralph Cates. He is survived by his wife, Ginger Cates of Tyler; sons, Scotty Cates and wife Karen of Gresham, and Rex Cates and wife Lynne of Lindale; daughter and husband, Shelia and Kevin Rafferty of Raytown, Mo.; three grandchildren, Karmen Serda and husband Bryan of Gresham, Jacob Cates of Oak Harbor, Wash., Caleb Cates of Lindale; and a brother, George Cates of New Harmony.

Pallbearers will be Dale Cates, Eddie Cates, Kip Cates, Dennis Cates, David Cates and Jack Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Miller, Jess Morris and Tom West.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
