Civil War Union Soldier. He enrolled in Company A, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private on September 13, 1862. After serving through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campiagn, and the January 1863 "Mud March", he was promoted to Corporal on January 31, 1863. He served in the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out with his regiment on June 27, 1863.
