Civil War Union Army Officer. He began his Civil War service by enrolling in Company A, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1862. Mustered in as a Sergeant on September 13, 1862, he served in the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign. Just after the aborted "Mud March", he was promoted to 1st Sergeant of the Company on January 31, 1863, filling a capacity that had been vacant since original 1st Sergeant John E. Cheeseman was reduced to Private on November 29, 1862. He served through the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out with the 23rd NJ on June 27, 1863. He stayed away from the war until March 10, 1865, when he was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company K of the newly-raised 40th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry (the last infantry regiment mustered into service from New Jersey). He led his command in the April 2, 1865 Union assaults that finally broke through the Confederate positions at Petersburg, Virginia, and in the subsequent surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was honorably mustered out on July 13, 1865, and received a brevet of Major, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services before Petersburg, Va.", to date from April 2, 1865.
