Corp. Vaill of Goshen CT, answering Lincoln's call for 300,000 volunteers, joined the regiment during it’s formation in August of 1862. He survied the battles of Cold Harbor, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Petersburg. But it was on October 19th 1864 ( exactly 140 years ago) at Cedar Creek that he was shot and later died of his wounds.
According to the Regimental History by Theodore Vaill, Corporal Henry Vaill was shot in the neck and lungs about sunrise and remained all day in the enemy’s hands, who robbed him of everything. He was recovered that night and died in the Taylor Hospital, Winchester VA. on Nov. 4th 1864.
