Senior U.S. District Judge Clyde S. Cahill, whose relaxed courtroom demeanor masked a fierce commitment to civil rights, died at his St. Louis home. He was 81.

Judge Cahill was born in St. Louis. He and his wife, Thelma, had six children - V. Clyde Cahill, Lalinda Diggs, Marina Gould, Randall Cahill, Kevin Cahill and Myron Cahill. In addition to his wife and grown children, he also is survived by seven grandchildren.

Nominated by Jimmy Carter on April 2, 1980, to a seat vacated by James H. Meredith. Confirmed by the Senate on May 21, 1980, and received commission on May 23, 1980. Assumed senior status on April 9, 1992. Service terminated due to death.
