Old Time Cowboy.

He was born in Williston, North Dakota, to George W. and Dora (Broskosky) Barney. He was the oldest son of 12 children. He lived on a homestead in North Dakota and Montana, then for a time in DeRuyter, New York.

In 1929, John filed on his own homestead near Savery, Wyoming. After a few years he moved to Rangely, Colorado, and was involved in ranching with his brothers.

John married Syble Williams in Craig, Colo., on Ocober 26, 1942. In 1950 they moved to the Meeker area and purchased the LO7 Ranch on Flag Creek, where he lived for the remainder of his life.

John enjoyed the cowboy life, ranching, livestock, hunting and most of all, his family. He was known for his hard work, honesty and integrity and never knew a stranger. In 1996, he finished and published a book on his life story titled "Looking Back — My True Memories," a great accomplishment at 87 years.

Survived by his wife of 61 years, Syble; sons Lynn and wife Myrna of Loveland, Colo., and Shane and wife Bonnie of Sheridan, Wyo.; daughters Kay and husband Bob Bivens and Phyllis and husband Bill Lake, and Debra Barney, all of Meeker, and Beverly and husband Bob Moss of Loomis, Calif.; 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters and one brother.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the John R. Barney Memorial Fund at First National Bank of the Rockies in Meeker. The proceeds of the memorial fund will go to preserve John’s love of Western history and the cowboy way of life.

Died at Pioneer Hospital in Meeker with his family at his side.
