From the Eshelman Family Tree book (Descendants of Peter Eshelman of Swatora 1724-1780, Immigrant 1749) published in 1976 by John and Esther Eshelman:

"Hiram Eshelman, a cabinet maker, born January 20, 1823, in Halifax, Pa. He married Catherine Shulley in 1850 [note:October 3, 1850]. He lived in the Brick House at Fairfield. He was drafted and accepted for service October 16, 1962, in Adams County, for the period of nine months, as a private of Captain McGinley's Company, 165 Regiment of Pennsylvania Drafter Militia Infantry, which subsequently became Company C, same regiment. He was honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg. He volunteered September 3, 1864, at Gettysburg, for one year, and was mustered into the service September 4, 1864, at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, as a private of Company G, 209 Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out and honorably discharged with company May 31, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia. He signed his second enrollment papers 'Eshelman', and his name appears on the army records also as 'Eschleman' and 'Eshleman.' He died October 12, 1903."

Obituary for Mrs. Katherine Eshelman (widow of Hiram) gives their date of marriage as October 3, 1848. It also says "...in 1883 they came to Sheffield which place has been their home since that time."
