Navy Department Reports Death of Appleton Sailor

Death of Machinist's Mate Third Class Bert William Guenther, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Guenther, 624 S. Fairview street, was reported by the United States Navy in a telegram to the parents yesterday.

The telegram gave no cause of death but the day previous a letter dated Jan. 26 had been received by the family from a China station saying the young man was seriously ill in a hospital. Today another telegram was received by the family indicating death took place in a foreign county but no other details were given.

When last heard from, the young was on the destroyer John R. Pierce. He went into the navy at the age of 17 immediately after graduation from St. John Military academy, Delafield. He received training at Great Lakes and served in the Atlantic before going into the Pacific and then to Japan and China.

Survivors are the parents, a brother, Frederick, and a sister, Janice, both at home. The late B. J. Zuehlke was the youth's grandfather.
