Woman Musician, Slapped in Face for Discordant Note, Ends Scale With Divorce
A discordant note in a family duet was blamed in a divorce proceeding here today for wrecking the marital harmony of Mrs. Minnie D. Whitmyer, 1802 1/2 North Fifth street (sic), and Harry R. Whitmyer, of Pequea.
The Whitmyers were married on December 23, 1914, and lived in harmony together until March 21, 1915, their domestic harmony extending even to little family duets on the piano, the wife playing "by note" and the husband "by air."
On that eventful March day they were indulging , in one of their piano duets when Mrs. Whitmyer, according to her testimony in her suit for divorce, struck a discordant note and ceased playing.
In answer to her husband's query as to why she stopped playing, Mrs. Whitmyer testified . that she told him she "could not play a whole piece through without making a mistake" and that he thereupon slapped her face and used abusive language toward her.
The wife alleged that with that incident there began a course of cruel treatment at the hands of her husband until their separation on November 1, 1917.
The court today granted Mrs. Whitmyer a divorce on the grounds of cruelty.
