The Rev. Edward C. "Ted" Gartrell, pastor emeritus of Central Presbyterian Church and longtime Huntsville resident, passed away on Sunday. He was 86.

He was born in Ashland, Ky., and was the son of the late Ethelbert H. and Helen Chadwick Gartrell. Mr. Gartrell was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers.

While still in high school, Mr. Gartrell heard and responded to God's call to the ministry. He graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois and received his divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1948. Mr. Gartrell served as pastor of Hunter Presbyterian Church of Lexington, Ky., and Calvary United Presbyterian Church in Butler, Pa., prior to moving to Huntsville to become pastor of Central Presbyterian Church. He served at Central until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Gartrell was active in denominational polity, serving from 1979 - 1980 as moderator of the Synod of the South of the United Presbyterian Church

An avid golfer, Mr. Gartrell also enjoyed travel with family and friends. He had a lifelong love of Christian music, especially old gospel hymns. Pastor Ted had a wonderful sense of humor, but the main focus of his life was spent in service to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, sharing the gospel and ministering to the needs of others.
