Merlin, age 95, passed away on Monday at Inncare in Evansville, where he currently resided. He was born to John & Edith (Eastman) Marshall. Merlin grew up in Hillsboro. He married Opal Nofsinger on Sept. 24, 1937. Merlin farmed in the Hillsboro area until he and Opal purchased a farm in Marxville, in 1947. While farming, they also owned and operated Marshall's Grocery. In 1968, they farmed in rural Brooklyn until they retired in 1973, moving to their home in the village of Brooklyn. In their retirement, they did child care for 24 years. Merlin enjoyed latch hook, crocheting and traveling. He is survived by his sons, Hal (Marcia) of Blanchardville, WI, and Jerry (Teresa) of Brooklyn, WI; eight grandchildren, Jason (Stacy Hardy), Matthew (Janice), Daniel (Tierney Mace), Dana, Amy (Stace) Jones, Travis, Heather (Derreck) Ott and Mark (Jenny); 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Una (Joe) Hawk and Leita Marshall, WI; brothers-in-law, Dorville Nofsinger and Gerald Best; and many nieces and nephews. Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Opal; sons, Allan and Larry; five brothers; and a sister. Funeral services were held on Saturday at Brookyn Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, with the Rev. Rebecca Ninke presiding. Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery. A special thank you to the staff at Inncare for their "wonderful" care of Merlin. Gunderson Oregon Funeral and Cremation Centers assisted with arrangements.
