Born at Board's Store, Bedford Co, VA.; father: William McCabe, mother: Elizabeth Ann Brown.

Company B, 2nd Virginia Cavalry, Wickham's Brigade, Rosser's Division, Valley District, Dept. of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Hendrick's Store, Bedford County; a 23 year-old Tobacconist; 5'10", dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair.
Enlisted on 5/28/1861 at Davis Mills, VA., he traveled 34 miles to Camp Lee, where on 5/31/1861 he was mustered into Captain James Wilson's Company Mounted Rangers "Bedford South Side Dragoons", 30th Virginia Volunteers, as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company F, 2nd Virginia Cavalry.)
Listed as 4th Sergeant on remaining Rolls starting with Sept & Oct 1862 Roll.
Present on all Rolls from enlistment until his horse Killed In Action and he severely Wounded In Action 10/11/1863 at Raccoon Ford, VA.; right leg amputated above knee; reimbursed $800 for horse; Absent, wounded until retired 8/4/1864 to Invalid Corps Corps.

and Land Assessor, at Davis Mills, VA.

The 2nd Virginia Cavalry was organized by Colonel Jubal Early in Lynchburg, Virginia, in May, 1861 as the 30th Virginia Volunteer Regiment under Col. Richard C.W. Radford (whence "Radford's Rangers"—not to be confused with Troop G's similar nickname). Its troops (the cavalry equivalent of infantry companies) were recruited across several counties of Central Virginia. At the end of October, 1861 the unit was re-designated the 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment.
