Captain, US Air Force. Son of John F. and Ann T. Thornell. His brother, John, was also a pilot in the US Army Air Force and the US Air Force, in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Edmund's home of recored was listed as Redondo Beach California. Edmund was an O-1 Bird Dog pilot serving as a forward air controller with the 21st TASS, 505th TACG, 7th Air Force. On 10 September 1966, Captain Thornell was shot down by ground fire and crashed on the beach near Phu Hiep, Phu Yen Province. His body was removed from the smoking wreckage by B Company/1-22 Rifle Platoon Leader Bob Babcock and his Platoon Sgt. He was killed on his 33rd birthday. Edmund and his wife Anita were the parents of sons Edmund and David, and daughters Katharine and Anita. He is remembered on the Vietnam War Memorial Wall at Panel E10, Line 85.
