Walter Burritt Brock was the only son of Fenelon B. and Lilian Burritt Brock. He was born in Washington DC on November 4, 1892. On 16 June 1914 he married Mabel Louise Chapin the only daughter or Alvin W. and Grace Raymond Lewis.

Walter was a Presbyterian minister, a 1918 graduate of New York's Auburn Theological Seminary. He also studied at Harvard.

Walter and Mabel had six children - Marian, Edith, Alvin, Richard, Lawrence and Dorothy. They were divorced in 1939.

In 1941, he married Mary Evelyn Moon. They had three children - Esther, Alvin and Mary.

When he died in 1980, Walter willed his body to science.
