Thomas born Wales, UK about 1834 to John Bray and Sarah Allcock. He and his entire family arrived USA at new York harbor 5 May 1842 arriving from Cardiff, Wales. His father Johns a steam power engineer and was instrumental in the first B&O railroad construction from Cumberland as well as the establishment of the iron industry in Wheeling.

Thomas was an iron boiler by trade.

He was married to Mary Hodgkiss 1856 at Wheeling, WV, and they had five children together. Mary died Bellaire, OH 1875. For a while they lived Cumberland, Maryland.

Thomas served in the Civil War as Corporal E Co. Potomac Home Brigade, Maryland between August 1861 and September 1864.

Thomas then married Barbara Ann Arnold June 1875. Barbara had cared for his first wife in her last days. Thomas and Barbara had six children together.
