A volunteer for the Civil War, Guinn entered the war on April 19, 1861 as a member of Company C, 7th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Barely avoiding capture, he spent five days hiding in the mountains and living on berries and leaves. In 1862 he was promoted to Corporal and took part in the battles of Winchester, Port Republic and Cedar Mountain. In 1864 he moved to California where he taught school for three months before going to Idaho to mine for gold, which he did for three years. He returned to California in 1867 and in 1869 served as principal of schools in Anaheim and in 1881 he was appointed superindendent of the city schools of Los Angeles. An active member of the Historical Society of Southern California in 1883, he also wrote a brief history of California and of Los Angeles city and county.
