Kenneth William Hagerman, an 11th-generation Southolder, died at San Simeon by the Sound Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greenport on Oct. 21, 2010, from the effects of Alzheimer's disease. He was 85.

He was born to Earl Payne Hagerman and Betty (Sowry) Hagerman in a Brooklyn hospital on June 20, 1925, while the family had briefly moved away from Southold for employment.
After graduating from Southold High School in 1944, he served with the Army's 25th Division in the Philippines during World War II. On April 8, 1945, he was wounded by sniper fire while on patrol. He was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for "exemplary conduct in ground combat against an armed enemy." After convalescing in an Atlantic City Army hospital for nearly a year, he again returned to Southold and married his high school sweetheart, Margaret "Midge" Flynn, also of Southold.
With help from his brother-in-law, Bill Sniffen, he learned the letterpress printing trade and, in 1950, began working at Academy Printing in Southold. He purchased the business in 1974 and later helped found The Peconic Bay Shopper.
Over his many years in Southold, he remained active in the community. He was a member of the Southold American Legion, coach of the Southold Little League, member of the Southold Fire Department Eagle Hook and Ladder Co., member and president of the North Fork Lions Club, trustee for the Southold United Methodist Church and chairman of the SUM fund, and for years he ran the church's annual roast beef dinner.
He loved traveling, but not flying, so the RV was Ken's choice of transportation. He and Midge joined the Isle-N-Ders RV Group, and the country was theirs for the taking. Ken visited 49 of the 50 U.S. states — 48 by RV with Midge plus Hawaii by troop hospital transport — missing only North Dakota.
His many hobbies included horseshoe pitching, softball, bowling and golf. Many Southold High School students from the '60s may remember him on his light blue scooter as he passed by the school every day to go home for lunch — or as a chaperone at the summer dances at the Wharf House at Founders Landing.
He was a caring, friendly, gentle soul who gave all he could, a wonderful husband and great father, grandfather and always-loyal friend. He was a chocoholic who will be missed.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years; daughter JoAnn Hagerman of Alamosa, Colo., son Michael Hagerman and wife Rita and daughter Marilyn Dunn and husband Michael, all of Southold; sister Betty Ann Hagerman, also of Southold; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 21 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Janet Sniffen, in 1985.

Visiting hours will be tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 29, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held at Southold United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, followed by interment at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery in Southold.
Memorial donations may be made to Southold United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 62, Southold, NY 11971.
