Carlisle, July 25--Hon. Robert H. McCachran, a prominent attorney and legislator of Cumberland county, died this morning at 7 o'clock at his home in Newville. For the past six months he had been in ill health, but only within the past two weeks did it reach a critical stage.

Mr. McCachran was born in Newville on October 6, 1835, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McCachran. The greater part of his life was spent in that town. In his youth he attended a classical school taught by his father, after which he attended Jefferson College and Lafayette College, graduating from both institutions.

After his graduation he engaged in teaching and also read law in the office of the late Judge Frederick Watts, of Carlisle. He as admitted to the Cumberland county bar in 1858, but did not practice for some years, having the management of his father's property. From 1870 until 1875 he held positions as civil engineer on the Harrisburg and Potomac and Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1883 Mr. McCachran began practicing as an attorney, continuing in that profession until his death.

Mr. McCachran was a staunch Democrat and a prominent party man. He served two terms in the Legislature from 1879 until 1882. He was one of the present Democratic nominees for the same place.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and is survived by his wife and the following children: Thomas, of Altoona, and Mary Jane. Margaret and Russell, residing at home.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
