During Operation MALLARD under the OPCON (Operation Control) of the 9th Marines, Company I began a sweep eastward though the village complex of My Hiep, in Dai Loc District towards their assigned LZ (Landing Zone) for extraction. Approaching their destination, the Marines were hit by a barrage of enemy mortar and a volley of rifle fire which resulted in thirteen casualties who were evacuated. One of the wounded, LCpl Dulay was evacuated to C Medical Battalion in Da Nang, where he died of multiple shrapnel wounds.
