Powell, sr.

Private services for Watson Powell, sr., co-founder and for 31 years president of the American Republic Insurance Co. here, were Tuesday at the A. L. Moore and Sons Mortuary in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mr. Powell, who was retired, died Saturday at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., after an illness of about a month. The body was cremated.
Born in Elsberry, Mo., Mr. Powell lived most of his life in Des Moines until moving with Mrs. Powell to Scottsdale several years ago.
He and Mrs. Powell co-founded the American Republic firm here in 1929. Mrs. Powell served for 30 years as the company's secretary and teasurer. A son, Watson, jr., is now president and chairman of the board.
Mr. and Mrs. Powell recently expressed intent to make a substantial gift to the new $4 million, 150-bed convalescent center at Iowa Methodist Hospital, known as the Helen Powell Convalescent Center.
In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Powell is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Anderson, living in California and Lanelle Powell of St. Louis; a brother James of Des Moines; and two grandchildren.
