Yarrie was the only daughter of William Watson and the youngest daughter of Margaret McDonald. She was named after her father's sister, Mary Ann Nalder nee Watson, who died in childbirth, her father's mother, Mary Gaskell and his paternal grandmother Elizabeth Yarwood.

Although Yarrie was born in Wycheproof, by 1913 she was living at Albert Park in Melbourne where she met her husband, Reginald Tanswell, whom she married at Christ Church South Yarra on the 11th April 1921.

For many years, Yarrie and Reginald lived in Moonee Ponds in Melbourne, where their son Russell George Tanswell was born. Towards the end of their lives they moved to Wollongong West in New South Wales, where they were living when Yarrie died on 5th December 1964 at the age of 72.
