Word has been received of the death of Brenda Kay Porter Hayes, 48, of Roosevelt, Utah, who died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Latter-day Saints Hospital, Salt Lake City, from injuries suffered in a fall at her home.

Born July 31, 1951, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was a daughter of Roy K. Jr. and Madaline R. Decker Porter of Chambersburg.

She received a nursing diploma in 1972 from Polyclinic Medical Center School of Nursing, Harrisburg, and was awarded its alumni association's award for "excellence in bedside nursing." In 1999, she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, graduating summa cum laude and as valedictorian.

Mrs. Hayes was a nurse in obstetrics at Uintah Basin Medical Center, Roosevelt. She worked with newborns and their mothers, traveling in the area and giving follow-up care in their homes.

Her hobbies were writing poetry and children's stories, quilting, knitting, crafts, traveling, playing the guitar, going to the Mormon Temple, studying the Scriptures, relearning German with son Matthew, vegetable gardening and canning and genealogy.

For many years, she was an instructor in her church's ward family history class.

She and her husband, Charles Lee Hayes, were married May 6, 1972, in Chambersburg. Their marriage later was solemnized on Sept. 12, 1978, in the Washington, D. C., Latter-Day Saints Temple.

Besides her husband and parents, surviving are a daughter and two sons, Jennifer R. of Seattle, Michael L. of Salt Lake City, and Matthew K. of Roosevelt; a brother, John K. Porter of Chambersburg; and a sister, Linda R. Kaiser of Waynesboro.

Service was on Friday morning in Roosevelt Latter-day Saints Second Ward Chapel. Burial was in Roosevelt Memorial Park.
