Alexander Harutyunyan was born in 1920 in Yerevan. He graduated from Yerevan Conservatory's creative and piano departments in 1941. Between 1946-48 he improved his skills in Moscow Center of Armenian Culture. From 1954 until 91 he was the artistic head of the Armenian Philharmonic, and professor at the Yerevan Conservatory from 1970-2008. Some of Arutiunian's works for wind instruments, notably the 1950 concerto for trumpet, the concerto for tuba, and the brass quintet Armenian Scenes, have secured their place in the international repertory,
