Family members called Carl "Pretty Baby" as an infant, then "Pretty" into his adulthood; this was finally shortened to "Pip."

Carl graduated from Corpus Christi College Academy in 1943. He was a starter on the football team.

Carl was inducted into the US Army October 18, 1944 at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. During World War II he served in Company D, 341st Infantry as a heavy machine-gunner. His unit traveled by train to Los Angeles and San Francisco, then shipped from Fort Mason to the Philippines. He was discharged November 12, 1946 at Fort Sam Houston as a Sergeant. He was a member of the VFW for 44 years.

Carl farmed in the Corpus Christi area from the Forties to the Sixties. Through the 1950s he, his wife and daughter lived near the southeast corner of Old Brownsville Road and Lexington (now S. Padre Island Dr.). In the Sixties Carl and wife I.V. lived on Lake Corpus Christi at Pernitas Point. In 1968 they established a ranch, which they named Esperanza, about five miles outside George West on US Hwy 59 . They operated the ranch for 30 years, first running cattle there and later adding a nursery.
