Harvey N. Burdick enlisted as a Private in the Third Independent Battery, Wisconsin Volunteer Light Artillery on 10 Sep 1861 for three years. (On the same date, Samuel Burdick—perhaps Harvey's brother or cousin, also enlisted in the same unit.*) This unit served in the Army of the Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland in the Western Theater of the Civil War and saw service in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. PVT Harvey Burdick was with his battery in the advance on Shiloh, TN (unit not present at battle); the advance on and "siege" of Corinth, MS; and Buell's operations toward Chattanooga, TN. He was discharged due to disability on 08 Aug 1862 and apparently returned to Wisconsin to recover.
On 27 Aug 1864, Harvey N. Burdick enlisted again as a Private in Company B, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, and returned to the Western Theater, where he served with his cavalry unit in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia. PVT Burdick died on 16 June 1865 in Nashville, probably of disease.
(*PVT Samuel Burdick continued his service in 3rd Wisconsin Battery until 3 July 1865.)
