Ahrens, Donald T. 90, of Elgin passed away Monday, September 17, 2012 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. He was born March 7, 1922 in Elgin the son of Theron L. and Mary Seylier Ahrens. He was a fireman with the City of Elgin for over 20 years before retiring in 1974. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the European Theater and also in the Korean War. He was a tank driver and was in five campaigns in Europe as well as five campaigns in Korea. He was a member of St. Laurence Catholic Church, Elgin, VFW Post 1307, Elgin, American Legion Post 57, Elgin, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 799, Elgin, The Owls Club, Elgin, Illinois Retired Firemen's Association, and the 112th Field Artillery Association ofTrenton, N.J. Surviving are his nephew, Dennis "Buck" (Sherry) Ahrens and niece, Deborah Ahrens Meier; great-nieces and great-nephews, Shawn (Chris) Ahrens, Jason (Heather) Flick, Randy (Amy) Drexler, Jerry (Kristin) Drexler, Kathlyn (Jason) Llewellyn, Justin (Heidi) Meier, and Jennifer (Eric) Bouma. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald Ahrens; a brother and a sister in infancy and a great-great-niece, Ashley Ahrens. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, September 20 at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., St. Charles Borromeo Church Cemetery, Hampshire. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
