J.B. was a proud Navy veteran. After getting permission from his parents, he left the farm in North Carolina and at age 17 enlisted in the Navy in March 1942. After completing recruit training in Norfolk, he was assigned to the Navy Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was then assigned as a member of a Navy gun crew aboard the merchant ship SS Sherazada that was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the Gulf of Mexico near Morgan City, La. He was later assigned as a member of a Navy gun crew aboard the SS Bernard Baker. In 1943 this ship was part of a convoy of 23 ships transporting lend lease equipment to Murmansk, U.S.S.R. This convoy was attacked by U-Boats, Dive Bombers, and the German Battleship Scharnhorst. SS Bernard Baker was one of six merchant ships out of the original 23 which were able to complete the round trip back to the United States. After World War II, he continued serving the Navy and retired as a senior chief fire control technician. Like so many of his generation, J.B. was profoundly changed by what he went through in the Great Depression and World War II. Although he was proud of what he had done, he would seldom share his stories unless he was asked. He was a member of Princess Anne Plaza Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans, and the Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 99.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie G. Bennett; two sons, John Bennett and his wife Leigh of Chesapeake and C.W. Meixel and his wife Sonya of Canton, Ga.; four daughters, Beth Shelton and her husband Eddie of Lincolnton, N.C., Patsy Bernard, Kathy Lehman and her husband Paul, all of Virginia Beach and Gloria Hatten and her husband Paul of Woodstock, Ga.; three brothers, Bass Bennett, Roy Bennett and Willie Bennett and his wife Yvonne, all of Burnsville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Princess Anne Plaza Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Lee. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Princess Anne Plaza Baptist Church Building Fund, 245 South Rosemont Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
