Aside from being University Student Council Chairman of the University of the Philippines, Diliman in the 1983-1984 school year, he wrote articles critical of the Marcos administration while in UP Diliman. He was a founder of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), a left-oriented party in the Philippines in 1985 and became its secretary-general upon founding and served that position until his untimely death.
